From a letter by Giovanni Schiaparelli in Percival Lowell, 1907:

I recently studied some of Babylonian observations of Mars. It rather attempts to tell, but it is the beginning of planetary astronomy. This planet is really precious. It was the cause of the first observations of the Babylonians: through him, Kepler discovered his first two laws: now we want to unravel the mystery of life on another world. Mars is the earth, which is war, that we must abolish.

1900, which begins the new century, marks the end of the Directorate for Schiaparelli Observatory. The great astronomer
retiring from the celebrations and tributes from all over the world.

Between the pages more '" touching " kept on file there are records of January 1900, which he titled " things that must still do before you die . Here they are:

How Does A Mute Man Say

incontinence problems seen by the astronomer

is how Giovanni Celoria said the sonnet we are proposing today, consisting of Schiaparelli April 1875:
Schiaparelli and more we study the more we discover in him an unexpected extraordinary abilities of the mind. He and Eugenio Beltrami, two men of genius all Italian, they proposed a day, with a bizarre idea, write a sonnet to each rhymes on the method of least squares. Schiaparelli exit from the pen of the most crazy poem that can be imagined: When

Mars

"The great interest which the public expect the news of the astronomers on what happens on the planet Mars depends on the very natural desire to know if it is inhabited by intelligent beings, or at least with organic life, animal or even vegetable. "These words show us

Our in his capacity as adviser. In fact, next to the seven published memoirs on Mars for the Accademia dei Lincei and intended for scientists, he also he published several articles addressing a wide audience.
They appeared in journals of wide spread where they were avidly read by a large number of non-specialists, for which the main interest was represented by its presence of life on the planet. In these writings
Schiaparelli salt sull'Ippogrifo of fantasy and never abandons himself to considerations that they could find space in an academic context.
Here is a small but interesting selection:

Mars must certainly be a paradise for water!
And switching to a higher order of ideas, it will be interesting to find what form of social order is more convenient to such a state of affairs, which we have described, if the plot, or rather the community of interest, so they are inevitably linked together the people of each valley, do not make this much more practical and more desirable, that the Earth is not the institution of the socialist collective form of each valley and its inhabitants something similar to a colossal phalanstery that Mars could also become a haven for socialists (...)
of all this, dear reader, I leave to you the further consideration. I descend dall'Ippogrifo; you, if you like, you can continue the sprint. "

From Life on Mars. Excerpt from the magazine "Nature and Art", November 1895.

"We also have a little trust in the fact that Galileo called the kindness of nature, in grace with which she sometimes by unexpected rises a light beam to illuminate topics first believed inaccessible to our speculation, we have a fine example of that chemical in the sky . We hope, therefore, and study. "

From Planet Mars. Excerpt from the magazine "Nature and Art", February 1893.

"The study of all these puzzles has just begun, yet there was certainly nothing on the principles that you will need to support a rational interpretation of the same. All that will depend on progress in the coming years, the photographic representation of Mars. "

From Planet Mars. Excerpt from the magazine "Nature and Art", December 1909.

"As you can see the field of astronomy is not lacking new discoveries and new triumphs. Rather it lacks a sufficient number of scholars armed with instruments suitable for solving more difficult problems.
Large telescopes was discussed above, are, for some time and are still very rare on account of their cost, which is the category for hundreds of dollars.
The proliferation of these and other similar expensive scientific equipment will occur only when nations, by ceasing to waste more of their forces in injure each other, they can deal fairly their happiness and their improvement. Then maybe you will hear a little 'less than Armstrong and Krupp, and a little more than Merz, Cooke and Alvan Clark. "

From The Planet Mars and modern telescopes. Excerpt from the magazine "Nuova Antologia, 1878.

Sanitizing Wooden Blocks

A friend for all along: Johannes Kepler

A dream through the mind of Schiaparelli in his youth : build a coherent history of astronomy, as they had done in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century, French astronomers JS Bailly and JB Delambre.
Schiaparelli was unable to complete a real treaty, but his numerous writings on the history of ancient astronomy is still a landmark reference for scholars.
historical research Schiaparelli he applied the same method and with the same tenacity as they did for the observational research and, increasingly, with particular attention to the original sources: the end of his life he could read Greek, Hebrew , Assyrian and Babylonian and could also write in these languages. Among astronomers
"modern", then, Schiaparelli always felt in complete harmony with the great Kepler, which, in 1857, thus writes in his diary from Berlin:

"I just bought Nicolai from the first part of the new edition of the works of Kepler and man ... weird and funny. In truth, my head is very small, but still like her. He also has the habit of wandering in thought in a thousand extravagances, and also reach the seventh page of his letters, without having done yet word of his main store. He says in a certain place that the soul of Pythagoras rose in him, so I could say that his past is in me. Both are named John, both have great sympathy for the speculations regarding the harmony of the world if its name is added to an S in front of his Duth way, we find Skeppler, and there are the same radicals in Skiapparel! Ah, bad crazy! More ... earnestly the works of Kepler. This man attracts me so invincible .... Joannes Skepplerus "
